DSP Mobility Options

AARP has adopted a Ten Year Social Impact Agenda that focuses on a single overarching goal: People 50+ will have independence, choice, and control in ways that are beneficial and affordable for them and society as a whole. One of the primary factors determining people’s ability to achieve and maintain independence, choice, and control throughout their lives is the quality of their communities. Today, many Americans age 50 and older live in communities that do not provide access to the services and information they need to stay self-sufficient and mobile as they age. For many older Americans, a lack of mobility options poses one of the greatest challenges to remaining independent. As one of the ten goals in our Social Impact Agenda, AARP has made a commitment to ensuring that Americans 50+ are able to sustain mobility as they age. AARP’s Outreach & Service, Livable Communities, Driver Safety Program & Mobility Options is responsible for providing ongoing education, training, resources, and tools to help AARP staff and volunteers to be able to effectively promote and advance mobility options. National Action Agenda for Enhancing Mobility Options

National Action Agenda for Enhancing Mobility Options for Older Americans is the result of a 2004 national mobility forum of more than 40 organizations. The report identifies problems, solutions and core competencies among organizations currently engaged on mobility issues. As we come to understand our key allies, our challenge will be to plan the coalitions and partnerships that will bring to fruition aspects of the mobility plan and position AARP as a leading voice in the issue of mobility for older adults

AARP Mobility Toolkit released in 2007 is collection of step-by-step guides for promoting mobility programs. Primarily designed for use by AARP State Offices it can also be valuable to external organizations. The three original guides in the toolkit are:

Riding the Bus Presenter’s Guide

The AARP Riding the Bus Presenter’s Guide and DVD released in 2007 is designed for use by AARP State Offices, external organizations, and facilitators to plan and conduct riding the bus educational sessions. AARP has developed this DVD, Presenter’s Guide, and collateral materials to achieve 3 primary goals:

To forge a positive image of riding the bus as a viable community mobility option for older adults in their communities;
To empower and build new confidence for adults ages 50 and older so that they may easily use the bus to stay connected to their communities; and
To trigger discussion among viewers about mobility options available in their communities.

The Guide is based on work done by AARP Kentucky. It comes with a DVD containing the 11-minute video, the guide, sample materials, templates, and guide appendixes.

AARP Mobility Forum Planning Guide

The AARP Mobility Forum Planning Guide released in 2007 is designed for use by AARP State Offices to plan and conduct state or local mobility stakeholder forums. This step-by-step guide is based on the successful Forums convened by state offices in Florida, New York, North Carolina, and Virginia in 2006. AARP can take a leadership role in working with state and community partners and stakeholders to ensure the livability of their environment through the provision of responsive and comprehensive mobility options. AARP Pedestrian Safety Action Guide

The AARP Pedestrian Safety Action Guide released in 2007 is designed for use by AARP State Offices to plan and conduct pedestrian safety activities. The guide describes three levels of involvement in pedestrian safety. The Guide is drawn largely on lessons learned from the successful pedestrian safety initiative by AARP Hawaii and from AARP’s publication: Livable Communities: An Evaluation Guide (D18311). The guide is part of the Mobility Toolkit. It comes with a CD containing the document, sample materials, templates, and guide appendixes.

Advancing Mobility Options—Producing a State Transportation Report guide

The guide and its CD can be added to the Mobility Toolkit issued in 2007. This guide contains step-by-step instructions for AARP state offices and other groups partnering with AARP to promote a broad array of mobility choices for older adults in their communities.

The guide is designed to support mobility awareness efforts by state office staff and volunteers. It also supports our work with creating livable communities and having volunteers serving as the voice of Americans 50+ on MPO committees. Those efforts may focus on local concerns or more broadly on statewide mobility challenges. To that end, state office staff may tailor the report template to conditions and recommendations affecting a single city or the entire state. The guide is based on the AARP New Mexico Mobility Challenges for the 50 Plus Suggestions for Improvement New Mexico Transportation Report developed last year.

Promising Approaches for Promoting Lifelong Community Mobility guide

The Promising Approaches for Promoting Lifelong Community Mobility guide released in April 2008 is designed for use by AARP State Offices and Volunteers as a resource. This is an update of the 2005 AARP reprint of Promising Approaches for Enhancing Elderly Mobility.   This guide, developed by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) under the sponsorship of AARP, highlights programs and initiatives considered to hold promise for enhancing the safety and mobility of older adults across the nation. Areas covered in the guide include driver screening and assessment, education and training, vehicle design and advanced technology, roadway design, transitioning from driving, transportation coordination, and alternative transportation options. AARP staff and volunteers will find that this guide will serve as a valuable resource for community professionals conducting or interested in developing programs for promoting older adult mobility.
