AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest classroom driver refresher course especially designed for drivers age 50 and older. The course is taught by AARP trained-volunteers usually in two four-hour sessions. It covers rules of the road, current roadway conditions and normal age-related physical changes that may impact your driving and tips to compensate for these changes. Tests are not given. Position Function

The Instructor Mentor orients and provides administrative assistance to Instructor candidates of the AARP Driver Safety Program.

Responsibilities

• Informs all Instructor candidates in a Driver Safety program section about their responsibilities and orients them to program history, administrative procedures, sponsorship, promotion, and course administration.
• Interviews Instructor candidates and pairs them up with experienced Instructors to observe classes.
• Encourages Instructor candidates to teach small segments of a class or classes under the supervision of an experienced Instructor.
• May help experienced Instructor provide constructive feedback to Instructor candidates in their section.
• Notifies Instructor candidates of Chief Trainer/Trainer Instructor training date.
• Serves as back up to Assistant State Coordinator as requested and aids in conducting Instructor workshops and providing skills training to section Instructors.
• Instructs or monitors at least three Driver Safety classes per year for valuable insights into Instructor needs.
• Actively seeks and involves diverse populations in program activities.

Qualifications

• Ability to advise and train new volunteers on how to conduct Driver Safety Program classes.
• Ability to work well with diverse populations.

Term of Service and Length of Service

• The Instructor Mentor is informally selected by the Assistant State Coordinator and may continue in the assignment contingent upon satisfactory on-going progress reviews. The position may be rotated throughout any given year among a number of senior Instructors within a section.

Progress Review

The performance of the Instructor Mentor will be monitored on an ongoing basis. As appropriate, the Instructor Mentor and his/her supervisor will develop a work plan that will serve as the basis for the volunteer progress review.

Available Resources

AARP will provide volunteer travel accident insurance and comprehensive general liability insurance while performing volunteer responsibilities. Expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with program and AARP policies.
